Description

The Toll House, built in 1836 for the Swindon Marlborough and Everleigh Turnpike Trust, is located on the new turnpike to Old Castle to the east and Old Salisbury Road to the west. It is constructed of flint with brick quoins and dressings, featuring a plinth made of uncut flints and a slate roof. The central gabled block is angled to face the road to the north and includes a 20th-century central arch-headed window set in a brick-dressed opening, complete with a keystone above the brick arch. The eaves are supported by shaped brackets. On either side of the central block, there are lean-to sections that are set back, each also featuring arch-headed windows with brick dressings. The sides and rear of the building are rendered, and there is a 20th-century addition at the rear. A brick chimney stack is present.
