Description

Marlborough Lodge, built around 1800, serves as the lodge to Roundway Park. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a low slate roof, with a single storey design. The lodge has a projecting portico facing the former drive to Roundway Park, supported by four paired columns, and is adorned with an entablature and balustrade. There are single pilaster responds and a half-glazed door framed in an architrave. The entablature continues on either side, leading to a parapet that returns on the end walls. The end walls are accentuated by a projecting pediment on angle piers, which frame a Venetian window with blank side-lights and a central sash window.

At the rear, a wing has an entablature and balustrade on its south side, above a 12-pane sash window set in a recessed panel, complete with an architrave and cornice. Flanking the entrance to Roundway Park are two ornate oval rusticated gate piers, each featuring a fluted band beneath a corniced cap and raised piers with scroll tops on all four sides, with the cornice breaking forward over the scrolls. Each pier is topped with a large rounded urn finial on a heavy stepped base. An original ashlar base for iron railings extends from the east pier to the lodge, which is connected to a rusticated corniced pier. Roundway Park House, which has since been demolished, was constructed between 1777 and 1783 by James Wyatt for J. Sutton.
