Description
Brickham Bridge is a road bridge located on the Kennet and Avon Canal, built in the early 19th century with alterations made in the 20th century. It follows a standard design by the engineer John Rennie. The bridge is constructed from brick and stone and features a single elliptical arch, a band, a solid parapet, and piers with stone coping. There is a retaining wall for the towpath that has brick coping. At the northeast corner of the bridge, there is a single early 20th-century Great Western Railway weight-restriction sign. This sign is made of cast iron, shaped like a lozenge, with raised lettering and is mounted on an iron stanchion. Additionally, at the southwest corner of the bridge, near the parapet, there are two reinforced concrete cylinders from World War II, designed to act as anti-tank obstacles. Part of the bridge is situated within the civil parish of Devizes. The Kennet and Avon Canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810, with John Rennie serving as the principal engineer.
