Description

The Catherine Wheel is a public house located on Shrewton High Street, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of English garden wall bond brick with a hipped roof made of Welsh slate and features brick stacks. The building has an L-plan layout, with its gable end facing the road.

The front elevation is two stories high and has a three-window arrangement, with a projecting four-window wing on the right. A central entrance door with six fielded panels is located in the left range, flanked by a 12-pane sash window on either side. There is a notable verandah supported by square wooden posts with carved brackets that extends to the ground floor of the left front. The first floor of the left part features three 2-light segmental-headed casements and has toothed eaves.

On the left return of the right range, there is a six-panelled door and a 12-pane sash window on the ground floor, along with two 12-pane sashes on the first floor. The front of the right range includes a six-panelled door with a porch and three 12-pane sashes with segmental heads; the first floor has one 2-light casement and toothed eaves. The left return is a gable end facing the street, with a 19th-century canted bay on the right, a 16-pane sash on the left, and one 2-light casement on the first floor.

The rear of the building features flint and brick bands, external brick stacks, and 2-light casements. Attached to the rear left is a coach house with a pantiled roof and double wooden doors. The interior has been altered over time. The Catherine Wheel occupies a prominent position at the junction of High Street with Amesbury Road and Maddington Street.
