Description
This building is a Territorial Army headquarters, constructed between 1935 and 1936. Designed by A. Bulloch, who served as architectural advisor to the Air Ministry's Directorate of Works and Buildings, it is a notable example of interwar military architecture.
The building comprises a two-story main range with flat roofs, housing double-banded offices, connected to single-story pavilions with hipped roofs by a central entrance lobby and passageway. The layout forms an asymmetrical "H" shape. A main open-well staircase is housed within a connecting building.
The exterior is predominantly Flemish bond brick with a slate roof to the pitched areas, and a concrete structure with an asphaltic finish to the flat sections. Windows are small-paned timber sashes, with larger upper lights and smaller lower lights to the flat segmental heads of the central range. The main entrance features a pair of original panelled doors beneath a radial fanlight, set within responds with a moulded arch keystone. The left-hand pavilion incorporates an open three-arched loggia with voussoir arches, rudimentary capitals, and bases. The rear of the main range has a regular pattern of windows, returning to the rear wing at the same height. Original hopper heads and downpipes are present on all elevations.
The interior retains original joinery and a dog-leg staircase. Its detailing is restrained, reflecting a neo-Georgian style influenced by the Royal Fine Arts Commission and the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens.
Historically, the building represents a distinctive design from the Air Ministry and makes a significant contribution to the Old Sarum Airfield site. Further historical context and a general account of the airfield can be found in the descriptions of the associated hangars.
