Description

OLD CASTLE ROAD 1. 1594 Old Castle Inn (Formerly listed under Castle Road) SU 1432 12/379 28.2.52. II 2. C16/C17 supposedly on much earlier site connected with Old Sarum. Earlier part of building to Old Castle Road. Range of one and 2 storeys (sloping site). Flint and stone rubble some brickwork with remains of chamfered stone base to south part. Rendered single storey north part. Gable end old tile roof. Irregular casements some leaded with thin mullions, one sash and wood casements to single storey north end. Brick and flint gabled porch and rendered similar one to north. West front is late Cl8/C19 doubling of original structure. Gable end old tile roof. Painted brick. To left a large projecting canted end bay has been added, possibly open previously as porch on ground floor but now glazed in with paired and single sash lights. The rest of front has, on 1st floor, one tripartite sash window and a single sash window flanking canted bay to centre with hipped tiled roof. On ground floor altered windows and doors in rectangular bays. But one window retains glazing bars and panelled shutters. Single storey extension to north with weather boarded gable end. Rendered facing. 3 2 light casement. There is supposed to have been a C12 Inn on this site connected with Old Sarum. The interior retains some exposed beams.
