Description

The Old Castle Inn, located on Old Castle Road, is a building dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, believed to be on a much earlier site associated with Old Sarum. The structure features a range of one and two storeys, adapted to a sloping site. Its construction includes flint and stone rubble with some brickwork, and the southern part retains a chamfered stone base. The northern part is a rendered single storey. The building has an old tile roof with gable ends.

The windows are irregular casements, some of which are leaded with thin mullions, along with one sash and wooden casements at the single storey north end. There are brick and flint gabled porches, as well as a rendered one to the north. The west front is a later 18th or 19th-century addition that doubles the original structure, featuring painted brickwork. To the left, there is a large projecting canted end bay that may have been an open porch on the ground floor but is now enclosed with paired and single sash lights. The first floor has a tripartite sash window and a single sash window flanking the canted bay, which has a hipped tiled roof. The ground floor has altered windows and doors in rectangular bays, but one window still retains its glazing bars and panelled shutters.

There is a single storey extension to the north with a weatherboarded gable end and rendered facing, featuring three two-light casements. It is believed that a 12th-century inn once existed on this site in connection with Old Sarum. The interior of the building retains some exposed beams.
