Description
The remains of Old Sarum Castle and Cathedral date back to 1594. At the east entrance, you can see the stone abutments of the original drawbridge. There are remnants of a late 12th-century gatehouse, which includes two towers with semi-circular fronts. To the southwest of the gatehouse, the remains of a bakehouse with hearths and ovens can be found. The Keep is still standing, along with a range of buildings surrounding an inner court. To the south of the southwest Postern gate, there is a massive battered base of a tower. In the southeast, one wall of the 13th-century Hall survives, complete with a stone bench. The best-preserved section of the curtain wall is located by the Postern gate and Hall, with another range also in the southeast. The Norman masonry is 12 feet thick, and the walkway is still intact. Only the outlines of the Cathedral's foundations remain, but the undercroft of the Chapter House is preserved.
