Description
10A Alfred Street is a building that was originally part of Nos 8 and 10, dating from the 16th or early 17th century, with alterations and extensions made in the early 19th century. It is constructed of English bond red brick and has two storeys. The older section faces Alfred Street and features a steeply pitched roof that is partly tiled and partly covered with pantiles, supported by double purlins. The building has framing pier strips and one range of early 19th-century two-light glazing bar sash windows, although the lower sashes lack glazing bars. The stone frames have beaded inner edges and projecting keys.
There is a small lower extension at the back with a hipped pantile roof and a half-glazed doorway to the right. At the rear, part of the building is timber framed with brick infill that is rendered, featuring a possibly reused wall plate with a chamfered end. A similar chamfer can be seen on the main beam of a large ground floor room. On the first floor, a roughly moulded post supports a very late medieval (16th century) arch-braced collar truss in the roof, which has two rows of wind braces.
