Description

Old Alfred House, originally one house with No 10A, dates from the 16th century, with most of its structure from the 17th century and some alterations from the late 18th or early 19th century. The building has two storeys and is constructed of brick in an 'L' plan layout, with the range facing north rendered. It features a steeply pitched double purlin pantile roof, while the rear of No 8 has a tiled roof.

No 8 has two ranges of windows, coupled on the right side, with sashes that have glazing bars in the upper sashes. The central entrance has a pedimented door piece with dentil edge mouldings, and the pilasters are fluted and terminate in brackets supporting the pediment, which has guilloche ornamentation. The entrance door is a six-panel design. To the right, there is a lower half-hipped extension.

No 10 interlocks with No 10A and also has an 'L' plan. The range facing west features two windows on each floor, with glazing bars in the upper sashes and moulded frames. Three of these windows have stone lintels and are irregularly placed. The north gable end has paired windows. The entrance has a pedimented door piece similar to that of No 8, and there is a three-light mullion casement above (part of No 10A) along with a six-panel door, of which the upper four panels are glazed. Inside the range facing west, the ground floor retains a fine 16th-century ceiling with two heavily moulded beams and a cross beam.
