Description
The Lopes Arms Hotel, formerly known as The Lopes Arms Inn, is a building primarily from the 18th century. It is believed to have been established around 1754-1809 and is said to be located on the site of a 16th-century inn called "The Saint George and the Dragon." The hotel has two storeys, with an older wing on the right side. It features painted brickwork, a projecting plinth, and a moulded string course at the first-floor level.
The first floor has six windows arranged as 2+2+1+1, with glazing bar sashes that have slab surrounds with beaded inner edges. The second window from the right is tripartite, with the side panels blocked. The ground floor has irregularly spaced windows, including a large arched yard entrance on the left. There are two windows, one of which replaces the former bar entrance, featuring a stern-shaped loop overthrow with "Lopes Arms" in gilt lettering. Next to this is a single-storey angular bay window with a small moulded wood cornice, a wood blocking course, and a lead flat roof, followed by modern double doors on the right.
The eight-hand wing has a double hipped roof covered with old tiles. The elevation facing the Market Place has two windows on each floor, with sashes and glazing bars on the first floor. The elevation towards All Saints Graveyard features one window on each floor to the right. There are various extensions at the rear, which rise to three storeys due to a significant drop in level.
