Description

The Town Hall is an early 19th-century building located on the east side of Westbury Market Place. An inscription on the frieze states, "Built by Sir Massey Lopes Baronet, Recorder of this Borough, Anno Domini MDCCCXV." The building has two storeys and is constructed of Bath stone ashlar that has been cleaned and restored. It features a hipped slate roof and is divided into three bays on the ground floor, which is colonnaded and supported by rusticated piers with two Roman Doric columns in each bay, holding up a wooden entablature. There are three modern shops within the colonnade.

The central bay of the first floor projects slightly, with each bay containing an arched recess that has moulded architraves and a moulded string at the springing. The central recess features an arched panel with a clock face, while the flanking recesses have arched windows with narrow margins and radiating glazing. The first floor recesses have balustered aprons, and the capping is continued as a cill band. The plain frieze includes a curved inscription, a small moulded cornice, and a blocking course. The central block is topped with a moulded pediment that displays the Lopes Arms carved in stone within the tympanum. Each end elevation has a similar recessed window on the first floor, and the colonnade is also returned at the ends.
