Description
36A and 36B The Close is a mid-18th century building that is a casing of an earlier structure. It has two storeys and an attic, with a stucco facade and a steep hipped roof covered in old tiles. The building features a coved and moulded eaves cornice and three hipped, tile-hung casement dormers. On the first floor, there are five windows with flush architrave framed sashes that retain their glazing bars. The ground floor has two flush framed tripartite sashes, also with glazing bars, flanking a central door made up of six fielded panels, which is set within a wide stone Roman Doric doorcase that includes pilasters, an entablature, and a pediment. To the left of the central door, there is a secondary door, also with six fielded panels, which is recessed and features panelled reveals and a doorcase with reeded pilasters, rosette corner blocks, and a cornice above. Inside, the ground floor has exposed ceiling beams. The south front facing North Walk has three windows on the first floor and two tripartite sashes on the ground floor, similar to the west front. There was a former central doorway or window that is now blocked. All the listed buildings in The Close create an outstanding group.
