Description

No. 33, The Close is an 18th-century recasing of earlier buildings, likely originally two or three houses. It is two storeys and an attic, with a single-storey and attic section. The exterior is partially colourwashed brick, with an old tile roof that is half-hipped at the north end. The north front features a large, tiled-roof canted bay window on the first floor with intact sash windows and glazing bars, and a smaller canted bay window below with casement lights. The east front has two dormers. The east front has three windows on the first floor, a small canted bay window and one window on the ground floor, all with sash windows and intact glazing bars. A plain door is present. The south front is a two-storey painted brick elevation with a hipped old tile roof and one hipped dormer with a leaded casement. Superimposed canted bay windows flank the front, featuring small moulded cornices and panelled aprons, with sash windows and intact glazing bars. A two-light casement is centrally positioned on the first floor, with a central panelled door below, set within an architrave surround with a plain frieze and cornice. A single-storey and attic link block connects to the main building, featuring a dormer, lead casements, and a three-light casement on the ground floor. A modern two-storey west wing is constructed of red brick with a tile-hung first floor, dormers, and mullioned casements. The buildings form a picturesque group, and the site includes the location of Our Lady's Well. The listed buildings within The Close collectively constitute an outstanding group.
