Description
The Rose and Crown Inn is a 16th-century building that has been modernized. It stands two storeys tall with a long front that follows the curve of Harnham Road. The ground floor is partly brick and partly plaster, while the upper part is timber-framed with plaster infilling. The right-hand section overhangs at the first-floor level, and the roof features old tiles on the gable end.
There was once a large yard entry to the right of the center, which has now been converted into a modern entrance with glazed doors. The windows include irregular modern leaded casements and a small canted bay window on the ground floor. At the rear, there is a tile-hung gabled wing that has two tile-hung hipped gable dormers. Inside the north range, a first-floor bedroom on the south side has a good crown post roof, with trusses sealed at collar level.
Modern extensions on the west side connect the former barn to the main building, constructed of red brick with a hipped gable end and an old tile roof. The Rose and Crown Inn, along with Nos 2 to 14 (even), forms a group.
