Description
Old Harnham Bridge, also known as Ayleswade Bridge, was originally built in 1244 by Bishop Bingham. It spans two branches of the River Avon and an island situated between these branches, in connection with St Nicholas's Hospital on the north bank and a chapel located on the island. The bridge features a larger section with six arches and a smaller section with two arches, which includes a segmental center embrasure and a smaller angular embrasure at the south end on the east side. The remains of the old bridge, likely intact, can be seen within an outer casing that is probably from the 16th or 17th century. The structure is constructed entirely of ashlar stone and includes a solid parapet with plain splayed coping.
