Description

This is a late 19th or early 19th century building, likely a refacing of an earlier 13th-century structure, which was originally the Chapel of St John the Baptist. Some remnants of this original chapel are incorporated into the present building. The building has two storeys facing the road, but three storeys on the sides and rear, reflecting the low-lying nature of St John’s Island. It has a stuccoed facade and a low-pitched slate roof. The west front, facing the road, features a central two-storey bowed bay with a stone coping. This bay contains recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars on both floors. To the right of the bay is a six-panel door recessed within panelled reveals, above which is a rectangular two-pane fanlight. The door is framed by pilasters and a simple flat hood. Remnants of two lancet windows are visible on the north front and the south walls. At the east end, there is a group of three stepped lancets, widely spaced and featuring drip moulds. A doorway with a continuous chamfer is located below road level to the west. Nos. 7 to 11 (odd) are designated as a group with Nos. 16 and 18.
