Description

Pains Bridge is an accommodation bridge located on the Kennet & Avon Canal, built in the early 19th century with some alterations in the 20th century. It follows John Rennie's standard design and is constructed of brick and stone. The bridge features a single elliptical arch, a band, a solid parapet, and piers with stone coping. There is a retaining wall for the towpath, also with brick and stone coping. At the northeast corner of the bridge, there is a single early 20th-century Great Western Railway weight restriction sign. This sign is made of cast iron, shaped like a lozenge, with raised lettering and is mounted on an iron stanchion. The Kennet & Avon Canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810, with John Rennie serving as the principal engineer.
