Description
Overmoor Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, constructed of rough rendered rubble stone with stone tiled roofs. The main range is two storeys and an attic, with coped gables at the north end and a rear wall stack. There are two hipped dormers. The front facade has a four-window arrangement; the left bay features C19 4-12-4 pane sash windows on both floors. The remaining three bays are near-symmetrical, featuring recessed hollow-moulded mullion windows with hoodmoulds. These windows are 4-light with a king mullion on each side, and 2-light on the first floor in the centre. A ground floor window on the right has been replaced with a 4-12-4 pane sash, and a further 2-light window is situated to the right of the centre. A central, later C17 ashlar gabled porch has a fine moulded doorcase, a basket-arched doorway, architrave, cornice on scrolled brackets, a shallow pediment and low relief finials. The inner doorcase has a studded plank door. A south-facing wall features a similar 3-light mullion window and hoodmould. The rear of the main range has a central projection for a truncated external stack, and a wall-face stack to the right. There are two-light windows on each floor adjoining this stack to the right, and to the left, a single stair light, two first-floor 3-lights, and two ground floor 2-lights, all with hoodmoulds. A plank door is set in a moulded oak frame to the left. An 'L'-plan range is attached to the north end, connecting to an 'L'-plan stable and loft. A section north of the house has adjacent ridge stacks, a coped north gable, an east front plank door and casement, a rear 12-pane eaves hipped dormer, and a door within a triangular stone tiled porch. In the angle, there's a two-storey north-west outhouse and an 8-pane window to the right of the door. A range running east has a south side oak plank door in an oak frame, and one 3-light with a hoodmould and ovolo-moulded detailing. The stable range has a single light and door to the south, gable to the east, and a wing running north with an east side door and casements to both floors. Inside, the north end room features heavy chamfered beams and a moulded stone arched fireplace. A date of 1547 was reportedly found on a roof timber. The house was owned by the West family from around 1560 to 1609, the Long family from 1609 to 1677, the Speke family of Hazelbury Manor from 1677 to 1697, and the Edwards family from 1697 to 1913. Stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops are also present.
