Description

The Church of St Philip and St James is an Anglican parish church built in 1866 by J.H. Hakewill. It features coursed rubble walls and stone tiled roofs, with coped gables at the east and west ends, and an ashlar gabled bellcote at the west. The church has an aisleless nave and chancel, a south porch, and a north-east vestry. Designed in the Early Decorated Gothic style, it includes windows with Geometrical tracery, moulded eaves, and a moulded course beneath the windows.

The nave has four bays with clasping buttresses at the west end. On the north side, there are four 2-light windows separated by buttresses, while the south side has a single 2-light window. The gabled porch features a moulded pointed arch, along with a 3-light and a 2-light window, all equipped with hoodmoulds and head stops. The west end is defined by a pair of central buttresses framing a long 2-light window, which is topped by a pointed arch under the bellcote. A heavy buttress is located on the south side between the nave and chancel.

The chancel includes side lancet windows, with three on the south side, one on the north, and a 3-light window at the east. There is a string course that is slightly higher than that of the nave, stepping up beneath the east window, along with clasping buttresses at the east.

Inside, the broad nave features an elaborate tie-beam roof. The chancel arch is marked by pierced arched braces that spring from short wall shafts to the tie-beam. Stained glass is present only in the chancel, with the east window dating from around 1866 and the lancets being slightly later. The church also contains a stone font and pulpit.
