Description
The Avoncliff Aqueduct, built around 1810 by J. Rennie, is a significant structure that carries the Kennet and Avon Canal over the River Avon, partly located in Winsley. Constructed from limestone ashlar with some areas of brick patching, the aqueduct features three tall segmental-headed arches with chamfered voussoirs, with the central arch being the tallest. Notable architectural details include vermiculated bands on the piers, rock-faced plat bands, and a recessed moulded panel on the east side at the center. The structure has a modillioned cornice leading to a plain parapet with weathered coping, and the approach sections of the parapet are balustraded. The canal was closed and drained in 1954 but was reopened following restoration efforts in the 1980s.
