Description

This late 18th-century drying house is located to the rear of numbers 7 and 8, Ancliff Square, in Westwood, Avoncliff. Originally built as a drying house, it is now used as a store. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar with a domed stone roof and a central cylindrical stone stack. It has a square plan and is single-storied. The front has two planked doors on the left and right sides. The returns have two open windows at a higher level, and the rear has two doorways similar to those on the front. The interior is divided into four 'cells'. It was possibly used as a blind house for confinement of inmates of a workhouse, but it was likely originally used for drying wool.
