Description

Upper Westwood Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid to late 17th century. It is constructed of random rubble stone with a double Roman tiled roof, incorporating coped verges and gable end concrete stacks. The two-storey building with an attic has a five-window front. The central entrance features a double 6-panelled door within a moulded stone architrave, leading to a porch with channelled rustication, fluted pilasters that rise to a cornice, and a shaped and battlemented parapet. To the left of the entrance is a 18th-century two-light beaded mullioned casement. To the right are two 2-light recessed cyma-mullioned casements and one inserted casement. The first floor has five 2-light recessed cyma-mullioned casements, each with a hoodmould, and a blocked bull’s eye window to the right. Two gabled 19th-century attic dormers incorporate 2-light casements. A single-storey 17th-century wing to the right has a 3-light ground floor ovolo- mullioned casement with a hoodmould, and a 3-light 19th-century mullioned casement to the attic. The left return displays a 19th-century first floor casement and some blocked openings. The rear of the house features 2-light ovolo-mullioned casements, a lean-to extension to the right, and a 20th-century extension to the left. Inside, the farmhouse contains chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, a large open fireplace with a depressed chamfered Tudor-arched stone lintel, a good staircase with turned balusters on a closed string, a moulded handrail, and square newels. Group value is derived from its well-preserved historic character.
