Description

Milbourne House is a detached house dating from around 1600, with a mid-17th century addition and later 19th and 20th century alterations and additions. The building is constructed of rubble with flush rusticated dressed stone quoins, stone dressings, and gabled stone slate roofs, featuring tall paired ashlar stacks and ball finials to the gable ends. It has a roughly L-shaped plan, consisting of a central range and a later advanced wing to the left. The main block is two storeys high with three windows, while the wing is two storeys and has an attic with one window. The windows on the main block are 3- and 4-light, with cavetto-moulded mullions, hoodmoulds, and small leaded pane casements. A 20th-century bay is located on the ground floor to the right. The wing's windows are 2- and 3-light, with ovolo-moulded mullions, small leaded pane casements, hoodmolds and flush relieving arches. A central gabled porch with a glazed door is present on the main block. The interior retains a former lobby-entry plan, including a central Tudor-arched fireplace with coved spandrels in the entrance hall. A ground floor room to the right contains mid-18th century panelling that was originally from Cam House in London. A newel staircase is situated in the angle between the original and later ranges, and another staircase branches off the entrance hall at the first floor level. The ground floor rooms have heavily chamfered beams. A Tudor-arched fireplace is found in an upper room of the mid-17th century wing. The building retains its original butt-purlin roof structure.
