Description
The stone seat and enclosure at the south end of the Long Walk at Hartham House is a garden feature dating from around 1905, designed by H.A. Peto and made of Bath stone. The seat is a semi-circular bench with scrolled armrests at each end, which are carved to resemble a griffon's foot, and it has wooden seating. The design is in a Roman style, reportedly inspired by the paintings of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. In front of the seat, there is a rectangular lawn that is enclosed by a balustrade, which ramps up to piers that face the Long Walk, and there are iron gates at the west end.
