Description

The David Ricardo Monument, located in the churchyard of the Church of St Nicholas, was erected in 1823 and designed by William Pitts. This monument is made of limestone ashlar and marble and is built in the Greek Revival style. It has a square plan and features fluted Doric columns at each corner of a stepped panelled plinth, which supports a simple moulded cornice and carved floriate cresting. At the center, there is a smaller plinth topped with a shallow urn. Below this, the upper part and capital of a Corinthian column are surrounded by naked hermaphrodite weepers. The monument is enclosed by long and short railings with spherical finials set on a chamfered plinth.
