Description
The Old Rectory is a former rectory dating from around 1830. It is constructed of ashlar stone with low-pitched slate roofs and an ashlar ridge stack. The main front has two storeys and a two-window facade featuring twelve-pane sash windows. Architectural details include raised ashlar angle strips, a plinth, and an eaves band. The east end has two windows, with a blank window to the first floor on the left and a doorway with a hood supported by consoles on the ground floor to the right. A one-window north end addition is present, and the south front is set back from the main facade, featuring matching angle piers, a plinth, and an eaves band. A rear wing, initially a single window in width, has been extended to two windows.
The Reverend R. Kilvert became Rector of Hardenhuish in 1835, and the diarist Francis Kilvert was born at the rectory in 1840. The family moved from the property in 1855.
