Description
Nos 43 and 44 on Church Road are a pair of cottages built around 1850 as part of the Bowood estate. They are constructed from squared rubble stone and feature a stone slate eaves roof, with two octagonal ridge stacks and similar stacks on the rear wall. The cottages are designed in a Tudor style and are one and a half storeys tall.
On the left side, there is a projecting gable topped with a finial. The upper floor jetties over an open porch that has ornate curving braces and incorporates bench-ends for seating, with turned wood baluster screens behind the seats. The left side has a two-light window with a hoodmould above it.
To the right, the main range includes two shouldered dormer gables, each with finials and two-light windows. The ground floor has three three-light windows, all featuring hoodmoulds. The south end wall has a ground floor door leading to No 44 and a two-light window, with the upper floor jettied and another two-light window, both with hoodmoulds. The rear roof has a catslide design with two dormer gables.
These cottages may have been designed by Emily, Lady Shelburne, who also designed Nos 22 and 23 Old Derry Hill, as indicated in Bowood estate plans.
