Three Monuments In Churchyard About 13 Metres South Of South West Angle Of Church Of St Nicholas

Three monuments are located in the churchyard about 13 meters south of the southwest angle of the Church of St Nicholas. These are three chest tombs dating from the 18th to 19th centuries, made of ashlar stone.

The first monument, which is unidentified and from the mid-18th century, features two octagonal plaques on each side, fielded angle piers, and rosette decoration on the central pier on each side. It has a moulded cornice and is partially buried.

The second unidentified monument, situated about 4 meters southeast of the first, is also from the mid-18th century and has similar features, including two octagonal plaques on each side, fielded angle piers, and floral decoration on the central pier on each side. It has a moulded capstone, with the moulding broken forward over the piers.

The third monument, dedicated to C. Awdry and located about 1 meter west of the second, dates from the early 19th century. It has rounded reeded angles, a framed plaque on the north side, and a ridged capstone. The inscription commemorates the Rev Charles Awdry.
