Description

The Church of St Nicholas is an Anglican parish church located in Bremhill Tytherton. It dates back to the 13th century but was rebuilt in 1802 and again in the mid-19th century. The church features original rubble stone masonry, with squared rubble stone used in later work, and stone slate roofs with coped gables. The structure includes a nave, chancel, and north aisle.

The west gables are made of square rubble stone with a plinth. The nave has a small bellcote and a 3-light window with Tudor-arched heads, which may date from the 16th century. The aisle features a larger bellcote and a 2-light Y-traceried window of 13th-century design with a hoodmould, likely original. The north wall of the aisle is also constructed of squared rubble, and it has a moulded trefoil-cusped doorway that appears to be original, along with a Y-traceried 2-light window to the left. The east wall of the aisle retains original masonry and includes a 3-light window with intersecting tracery. The gable features a crocketed saddlestone.

The south wall of the nave has been rebuilt and includes a plinth and two 2-light flat-headed windows in the style of the 16th century. The east end has a saddlestone and finial at the gable. The chancel retains original masonry on the south side, with three 19th-century lancets, one located above a blocked low door. The rebuilt east wall features a basket-arched window with a hood, which may date from the 15th century but has 19th-century tracery. The north wall of the chancel has old masonry and three 19th-century lancets.

Inside, the nave and aisle roofs are plastered and feature large coves on each side. The thin 3-bay arcade consists of round chamfered arches supported by slim octagonal piers with sparse still-leaf caps, dating from the 13th century and heavily restored. The chancel arch is from the 19th century and is pointed, resting on heavy chamfered piers. There is a tri-lobe opening in the wall to the left, and the chancel has a plain 19th-century roof.

Notable fittings include a fine tub-shaped font from around 1200, which features raised arcading, a band of gables above, and fluting below. In the north aisle, there is a notable wall monument to Abjohn Stokes, who died in 1725, and a plaque commemorating T. Crook, who died in 1821, noting his role in the church's rebuilding in 1802. The east window of the aisle contains glass from around 1915 by Mayer of Munich. The nave has a west window from around 1893 and a plaque on the south wall commemorating L. Crook, who died in 1822, featuring an urn. The chancel has a plaque on the north wall for H. Barret, who died in 1627, and another on the east wall for A. Jacob, who died in 1653. Two lancets in the chancel contain stained glass from 1869.
