Description
Lower Peckingell Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the late 17th and 18th centuries. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a stone slate roof with brick stacks at the south end and on the front roof slope. The building is 1½ storeys tall, with a half-hipped gable at the north end.
The front of the farmhouse includes late 17th-century recessed cyma-moulded 2-light mullion windows, with one located in a large hipped dormer gable to the right of center, and three on the ground floor—one to the left of the door and two to the right. The south end wall is rendered, while the north end has a pair of small sashes on the first floor and a blocked attic light. The rear features similar mullion windows, along with an 18th-century rear wing that has a lean-to on its north side.
Inside, the farmhouse appears to be a cruck-framed former open-hall house, with a two-bay hall located to the south of the stack. It has raised cruck trusses with collars, where the apex of the center truss is truncated, and the north truss has been significantly altered for an inserted chimney. The roof has heavy purlins and shows some signs of smoke-blackening. The ground floor includes one very heavy chamfered beam with stepped run-out stops. The rear wing has a tie-beam-and-collar truss roof, likely from the 18th century.
