Description
The Red Lion Public House is a farmhouse that has been converted into an inn. It dates from the late 16th to early 17th century, with some 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of rendered sarsen stone, with a forward wing that is partly timber framed and features a thatched roof. It is a single storey and attic structure that has been raised in brick to two storeys, consisting of three bays. The layout follows a lobby entry plan, with a two-bay forward wing added to the left of the original service bay. There is an extensive rear wing added in the 20th century. The entrance is located in a thatched glazed porch at the original door position. The building has two and three-light timber windows. The forward wing is also two storeys, with the upper floor framed, featuring two panels high with corner braces and two blocked windows. The ground floor includes a canted bay gable. The roof is half hipped, and both central and gable stacks have brick flues. Inside, the building has been much altered, but the central hall bay retains a double ovolo moulded spine beam with bar stops, while the inner room features a simpler chamfered beam.
