Description

The United Reformed Chapel, formerly known as Avebury Chapel, is a building likely constructed around 1707, with alterations made in the early 19th century and a schoolroom added to the rear around 1890. It is built from sarsen stone with brick dressings, and features a tiled roof. The chapel has a rectangular shape with an entrance located in the north gable, which faces the street but is set behind a graveyard. The front was altered or rebuilt in the early 19th century to include a gallery, and there is a two-bay brick extension at the rear, with the first bay serving as an extension of the chapel and the second as a schoolroom.

The facade includes a central arched boarded door flanked by two pointed arched windows with 'Y' tracery, and there is an additional window above the door for the gallery. Hoodmoulds are present over the windows. The gallery features a high-level two-light side window. The schoolroom has three lancet windows in the south gable. Inside, the chapel consists of three bays, with a central reading desk in the first bay of the brick extension, which is wainscotted behind. There is a west gallery supported by timber posts and simple pews for seating. This building is an example of a dissenter's chapel built after the Five Mile Act of 1665, as it is located more than five miles from Calne, Devizes, and Marlborough. Additionally, it is situated within the southern inner and earlier henge monument.
