Description
The First World War memorial plinth is located in the churchyard of Leigh All Saints’ Old Chancel. The original plinth, dating from the 1920s, is a large square limestone block with a corniced top designed in the Classical style.
The cornice features an inscription on the north side that reads, "I WAS DEAD AND/ BEHOLD I AM ALIVE/ FOR EVERMORE." The main dedicatory inscription on the west face states, "+ TO THE PRAISE AND/ WORSHIP OF GOD & IN/ MEMORY OF THE GALLANT/ MEN FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE SERVICE/ OF THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ RIP."
The south face lists five names, while the north face has three names. The east face includes a later inscription for the Second World War, stating "WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945" followed by four names.
The top of the memorial has an empty socket where a cross was once mounted.
