The Swan Hotel including former shop adjoining to south

The Swan Hotel, incorporating a former shop to the south, is a significant 18th-century building with a complex history. The main section of the hotel presents a painted ashlar facade, two storeys high with a mansard roof tiled with modern pantiles to the upper pitch and stone tiles to the lower. Three flat-roofed dormers are visible, each containing casement windows.

The central portion of the facade projects slightly and features rusticated quoins and a pediment. A circular panel within the tympanum bears the painted inscription "A.D. 1500," although there is no external evidence to support this early date for the structure itself. The first floor has two windows on either side of the centre, these being double-hung sashes with glazing bars grouped in pairs and set within architrave surrounds. Wide stone mullions separate the windows, with moulded sills supported by three cut stone brackets beneath each. Each first-floor window has a wrought-iron balconette. The central window above the entrance is a Venetian style, featuring a semi-circular-headed centre light framed by Tuscan pilasters and a moulded sill with four brackets. A moulded cornice and a plain parapet top each side of the facade. The central doorway has a semi-circular head, keystone and impost, an overhanging fanlight with glazing bars, and a panelled door. The stone doorcase is embellished with Tuscan pilasters and an open pediment. To the right of the door are a pair of windows mirroring those on the first floor; to the left is an oblong window and a square-headed doorway with a half-glazed door. Plain pilasters frame the door, with a plain frieze and moulded cornice extending over both the door and window.

A building of lower elevation, formerly a shop, adjoins the hotel to the left and extends along the street. This section dates to the early 19th century and is constructed from coursed rubble with a hipped pantile roof. A weathered string course runs horizontally. The second floor has two windows, while the first floor boasts three paired windows, all with sashes that are missing their glazing bars and set within plain reveals. The original shop front retains a recessed central door flanked by shop windows beneath a single wooden fascia. To the right is an original sash window with six large panes, while fixed windows are on the left. Double doors feature rectangular fanlights, with each door having three panels, the upper two glazed.

The Swan Hotel is part of several groups of listed buildings. These include those in Church Street, the Chantry, Little Chantry, Barton Orchard, the Catholic Church of St Thomas More on Market Street, numbers 7 to 19 Barton Orchard, numbers 5 and 6, and numbers 27 to 31 on Newtown, and also forms a group with number 37 on Market Street.
