Description

Swan House, formerly the Swan Hotel, is a building dating to the 19th century, and subsequently altered. It is situated on a corner site in Petworth, incorporating shops and flats. The ground floor is constructed of red brick, while the upper floors are tile-hung with decorative bands of cusped tiles, with rubblestone to the rear and brick dressings. The roof is covered in plain tiles, and features broad ribbed and corniced brick stacks, along with crested ridge tiles. The building has an L-shaped plan, with a 5-bay elevation facing Saddlers Row and a 4-bay elevation facing the Market Place, plus a former first-floor ballroom. A plinth and a jettied first floor are present. Later 20th-century shop doors and windows are in keeping with the style of the building. Windows on the Saddlers Row elevation often have round-arched lights; the majority have a plate-glass lower sash and a small-paned upper sash. The Market Place elevation has a ground-floor outshut to bay 4. The first floor features a small-paned bow window in bay 1, with other windows having eared architraves. The upper floor has gabled windows alternating with oriel windows. To the right, steps lead up to the first floor containing the former ballroom, which has a small-paned shop door window and a hipped roof. The courtyard elevations include steps leading to a half-glazed, small-paned door to the former ballroom, alongside a large tripartite small-paned sash window. The main range has first-floor jettying, pent-roofed windows, round-arched and segmental-arched windows and gabled windows to the upper floor.
