Description
The gate piers at the west entrance to Heywood House were built in the 1840s, likely designed by Harvey Eginton for H.G.G. Ludlow. These piers are made of limestone ashlar and are octagonal in shape, featuring moulded plinths and decorative brattishing on the moulded cappings. Each pier is topped with carved stone crests representing the Ludlow family, which include a raised fist holding an arrow and a lion rampant; however, the crest on the right pier is missing its lion. On either side of the piers are wooden pedestrian gates attached to dwarf walls with a wooden fence, although the main gates are currently missing.
