Description
South Lodge with gate piers is a pair of lodges located on the south drive to Heywood House, dating from the early 19th century. The buildings are constructed of stucco with tiled roofs featuring coped verges and rendered stacks with moulded cappings. They are single-storey structures that are identical in design, each having a classical porch with round-arched openings and arched side windows, along with a blocking course to the flat roofs. Lodge No 1 retains a four-panelled door, while Lodge No 2 has a 20th-century door. Both lodges feature a moulded string course beneath the blocking course of the main roof. The east gable ends have round-arched sash windows, and the west gable ends are canted with round-arched sashes as well. At the rear, there are single-storey wings with casement windows and planked doors. The lodges are connected by painted ashlar gate piers, which are linked by cast-iron railings and gates. The piers feature pilasters on the lodge walls, urn finials on the piers, and half-urns on the pilasters.
