Description
Heale Cottage is a house built in 1900 by Detmar Blow for the spinster sister of Lord Greville of Heale House. The cottage features cob on flint sills and is smoothly rendered, topped with a thatched roof. It stands two storeys high, with a central bay that is recessed behind two symmetrical gabled wings. The central entrance has a six-panelled door set within an open thatched porch. The cottage has four-light timber windows with moulded frames on the gables and three-light windows above. There are inset dormers in the central bay, and the wings have quarter hipped roofs. On the sides of the wings are polygonal thatched bay windows, with the left wing extended to the rear by an additional half bay. Brick stacks with cogged offset heads are present. Inside, there is a generous entrance hall featuring a staircase with double spindle turned balusters surrounding an open well, and the floors are made of timber. This building represents an interesting late use of traditional local construction methods.
