Description

A group of three chest tombs, dating from the late 18th century to the 19th century, is located about 6 meters north of the north porch of the Church of St Swithin in Compton Bassett.

The first tomb, the Maunder monument from the late 18th century, is plain and features a chamfered base and capstone. The southern inscription commemorates Harriott Maunder, who died in 1772, while the northern side honors Richard Maunder.

The second tomb, the Austin monument from the early 19th century, is designed in a neo-Grec style. It has a ridged stepped cap and angle acroteriae decorated with honeysuckle. The angle piers are adorned with incised panels, and there is a raised plaque dedicated to Thomas Austin, who died in 1826.

The third tomb, the Bodman monument from the early 19th century, features trapezoid plaques on each side set against a horizontally fluted background. It has fluted angle piers, a moulded base, and a cap, with an inscription honoring Benjamin Bodman, who died in 1823.
