Description

The Compton Bassett War Memorial is a Second World War memorial erected in 1950. It is made of Portland stone and features a plain octagonal base with a pedestal topped by a tall Latin cross, which has a sword or cross carved on the front. The pedestal is inscribed with the names of servicemen who were killed in the First and Second World Wars, along with a verse attributed to Captain Fielding Johnson, a key benefactor who lost his only son and step-son in the Second World War. This memorial is an uncommon example of its kind.
