Description

Nos 42 and 43 in Compton Bassett are a pair of houses dated 1642, with alterations made in the 19th century. They are constructed from whitewashed chalk rubble and feature Bridgwater tiles, along with end stacks and a ridge stack. The buildings are two storeys high and originally had a four-window range of four-light timber-mullion windows, with doors located in the outer bays. No 43 has triple casement windows, while No 42 has four-light casements, both of which are from the 19th century. The west end wall of No 42 displays a datestone marked 1642 WI, and features a first-floor four-light casement that includes the head of the original timber-mullion window, along with a ground-floor triple casement that has a moulded timber lintel.
