Description
24 High Street is a building in Malmesbury that dates back to the 17th century and was later refaced in the 19th century. Originally known as Holland Chapel, it has served various purposes, including a guildhall and a chapel, and is now a shop. The building features a brick facade with a limestone rubble rear, a right-hand brick stack, and a stone slate roof. It has a two-room plan that is positioned at right angles to the street and stands two storeys tall with a one-window range. The left-hand doorway has a cambered head and a four-panel door, while the mid-19th century shop front includes panelled jambs, consoles, a cornice, and a plate-glass window. The first floor has a cambered head to a horned 2/2-pane sash window. The rear half-hipped gable has quoins and an 8/8-pane sash window on the ground floor, along with a 19th-century brick range. Inside, there are details such as blocked, wide-splayed window openings on the north side at both the ground and first floors, a curved recess beside the fireplace on the south side of the ground floor, and chamfered ceiling beams. The building was formerly equipped with a central right-hand lateral stair. Historically, it is noted to have been associated with the Dutch weaving community established in 1661.
