Description
This building, originally a house, is now two shops at 25 and 27 High Street, Malmesbury. It dates from the 17th century and was substantially altered in the mid to late 18th century, with further changes in the mid 19th century. The exterior is constructed of roughcast limestone rubble with limestone dressings, a brick party wall, ridge stacks, and a Welsh slate roof. The building is three storeys high and has a four-window front. A central doorway has a plate-glass overlight and a half-glazed door leading to a through-passage. There is a mid-19th century bayed shop front with glazing bars to the left, and a plate-glass shop front to the right, both sheltered by a full-width, bracketed canopy. The upper windows are 6/6-pane sashes. The rear of number 27 incorporates a 17th-century timber-frame wing with brick nogging and timber lintels over its sashes, set within flush frames. A date of 1783 is scratched into one of the window panes. Inside number 27, notable features include a section of 17th-century scratch-moulded panelling that forms part of the cellar door, along with chamfered ceiling beams.
