Description
No. 20 High Street is an inn that has been converted into a veterinary surgery. It has origins dating back to the 16th century, with the front range rebuilt in the late 18th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and features a brick stack and a hipped stone slate roof. It has a U-shaped plan with rear wings on either side of a through-passage.
The exterior is three storeys high and has a three-window range. The symmetrical front displays quoins and a central segmental arch leading to a cobbled through carriageway. There are shallow bays on each side with overhanging first-floor bays above, which contain paired 6/6-pane sash windows. The second floor has paired horned 6/6-pane sashes, while the centre features a segmental-headed first-floor 8/8-pane sash and a second-floor 6/6-pane sash, all with exposed boxes. At the rear, the 16th-century northern and 18th-century southern ranges project, with the southern range showcasing 8/8-pane and 10/10-pane sashes and a pair of brick side stacks.
The interior was altered in the mid-20th century and includes a covered flagged through-passage leading to the rear courtyard. The roof features collar trusses with butt purlins and a diagonally-set ridge between overlapping trusses. The northern wing consists of three sections, with the middle section being single storey and containing a re-set 16th-century moulded stopped beam, while the rear section has 16th-century collared trusses.
