Description
A row of shops and offices dated 1787, built of coursed and squared rubble with rusticated quoins and a projecting plinth. The building is three storeys high and features plain strings at each level, a string and coved moulded cornice, and a parapet with moulded coping, topped by an old tile roof. The upper floors have glazing bar sash windows; the outer windows are three-light, flanking a central single light, with the centre light of the outer windows taller on the first floor. The ground floor has been altered to include two plate glass shop fronts. The central yard entry retains an enriched ceiling with a rose design of patterned husks, but the sides have been widened and fitted with plate glass, and the cornice has been removed. A two-storey contemporary extension to the left mirrors the detailing of the main block, also with a tile roof and a single glazing bar sash window on the first floor. The front door has a six-panel design, an architrave frame, and a doorcase with panelled pilasters, double scroll cut brackets, a moulded and dentilled cornice, and a pedimented hood with a panelled soffit. At the rear, there are three ranges of windows, with glazing bar sashes; the outer windows on the second floor are tripartite. Tented hoods shelter the outer windows on the first floor. Two rainwaterheads, each with fluted cones, are inscribed “J. L. 1787”. Long, low wings extend from either side of the yard.
