Description
No. 71 Market Place is a building located on an important site known as Hatchett's Corner, which closes the Market Place to the east at the junction of Station Road and East Street. It was built as a Savings Bank in 1852 and features two storeys in an asymmetrical 17th-century style. The structure is made of coursed and dressed rubble. The west side has three windows, while the south side has two windows and an attic. There is a two-storey bay at the angle of the building. The left side facing west has a shaped Dutch gable with a clock and ball finial. The south side includes two gabled dormers. A band runs over the ground floor, and the windows are designed with mullions and transoms. The doorways are in the Tudor Renaissance style, featuring pilasters with strapwork over entablatures, with the west front showcasing fluted pilasters. This building is included for its group value.
