Description

This is a mid-18th century wool drying house, later converted into a cottage, located on the south side of Lowbourne in Melksham. The building is octagonal in plan, with a square 18th-century extension to the rear. It is constructed of local rubble stone, with a stone slate octagonal conical roof and a brick stack at the rear. The octagonal section has two storeys and a single window on each of the four sides. The windows are 2-light, featuring cyma-moulded or beaded mullions and casements. A square-headed doorway is positioned within a 20th-century porch. The two-storey rear extension has single cyma-moulded casement windows. Inside, the main room on each floor retains chamfered ceiling beams with stops. The building is documented as being associated with the local wool industry and is grouped with Nos. 28a, 30, and 32.
