Description
The statue of St. Anthony of Padua is located in Temple Gardens to the west of Wardour Castle. It was created in the early 19th century by Joseph Theakston for William Beckford of Fonthill. This life-size statue is made of limestone and stands on a square plinth adorned with egg and dart moulding, with rustic stonework on either side. It marks the western boundary of Temple Gardens. At the time of the survey in January 1986, the statue was in poor condition, with missing hands and frost damage. It was originally commissioned by Beckford and placed in a niche above the main entrance of the west wing of Fonthill Old Abbey.
