Description
Camellia House and garden walls at Wardour Castle were built in 1769 by Richard Woods for the Eighth Lord Arundell. The Camellia House is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a glazed roof. Its five-bay front includes central steel French windows with a fanlight, flanked by two similar steel windows with fanlights. There is an impost band, a modillioned cornice at the parapet, and a pediment above the central three bays. A brick stack is attached to the right return, and the rear is finished with brick walls. The house contains six mature camellias, which are reputed to be among the earliest specimens introduced to England from the East.
The Camellia House is situated at the center of a wall that encloses a large rectangular garden to the south and a smaller semi-circular garden to the north. The north garden features rat-trap bond brick walls with heating flues on either side and to the north of the Camellia House, while the rest of this garden is enclosed by brick walls in Flemish, English, or stretcher bond, approximately 4 meters high, with round-arched stone gateways that have keystones and imposts. The south garden is enclosed by Flemish bond brick walls, about 2.5 meters high. Although the camellias remain, the other gardens have been repurposed; a mid-20th century house has been built in the northeast corner of the north enclosure, and a swimming pool is located in the western half of the south enclosure.
