Description

The dairy in Temple Gardens, located to the west of Wardour Castle, is an ornamental structure dated 1794, as indicated on the rainwater head. It is built from limestone ashlar and features a domed lead roof. The building is circular in shape and includes a semi-circular west portico supported by four egg and dart unfluted columns. The portico has a fluted frieze with paterae leading to a Doric entablature and a parapet. The right side of the building has a lead rainwater head also dated 1794. The rear of the dairy features a semi-circular projection at the center with an oculus. Inside the circular portico, there are double 8-panelled doors and a semi-circular niche on either side. Although the interior was not accessible during the survey in January 1986, it is said to have a stone bench around the walls, which was formerly lined with tiles, and an octagonal lantern at the center of the domed roof. This dairy is part of the informal garden layout surrounding Wardour Castle, and its architectural details closely resemble those of the house, suggesting it may have been designed by either Paine or Soane, who worked on the chapel between 1789 and 1790.
